👉 Interested in the sensory perception of automotive touchscreens ? 📅 Join us for Rexhina SHYTI’s thesis defense on October 17th, 2024, at 2:00 PM, in Amphi 3, at Centrale Lyon. Under the supervision of Pr Hassan Zahouani, in collaboration with Pascale Nays from Renault Group, and the ANRT - Association Nationale de la Recherche et de la Technologie. ➡ Abstract : In an increasingly competitive automotive sector, Renault seeks to stand out by offering connected vehicles that enhance the driving experience. However, integrating touchscreens within the car interior brings numerous challenges related to user interaction with the touch interface and poses additional challenges for automotive industry manufacturers. This screen is both a technological object, expensive to produce, and iconic, representing 30% of the Perceived Quality of the car interior (data from an internal survey). Perceived Quality encompasses all immediate, rational, and subjective impressions that a user feels when interacting with a product. Opinions on Perceived Quality are formed based on expectations, sensations, and individual opinions. While the satisfaction of functional expectations seems increasingly well-managed, the same cannot be said for emotional expectations. Managing Perceived Quality is a central issue in the automotive sector as it is a crucial aspect for vehicle sales. As part of the thesis, the objective is to optimize the Perceived Quality of the automotive touchscreen through the study of touch, based on subjective data from sensory analysis and objective data from instrumental characterizations of the screen surfaces and the interaction between the finger and the surface. This doctorate focuses on studying and understanding the bio tribological phenomena involved in the dynamic interaction between the finger and the touchscreen. The development of innovative tools and methods for characterizing touch has enabled the quantification of this touch through the acquisition of objective measurements, such as vibrations induced by friction or the coefficient of friction. For this purpose, a haptic tribometer developed in the laboratory as part of the thesis, as well as an augmented finger device, allowed us to characterize the dynamic contact between the fingertip and the touchscreen. The results of the thesis will enable the company to establish specifications on the touch of automotive screens. On the other hand, the challenge is to garner a better comprehension on how surface properties, both topographical and physicochemical, impact the touch of the screens and the resulting tactile sensations. Conclusively, correlating all subjective and instrumental data has allowed us – through statistical models – to explain and interpret our results in terms of tactile sensations to predict touch. #Touch, #tactile_perception, #human_finger, #touchscreen, #TouchyFinger.

Dr. Dad: The Coorelation between Marathons & Dissertation/PhD 2007, 2008, and 2022 were remarkable years. 2007 Full Marathon ✔️ 2008 Hall Marathon ✔️ 2022 Dissertation/PhD✔️ 1) Hit the Pavement. The pavement is no respector of person- you gotta get in miles to learn how to run miles. You gotta write. As you write, you learn how to write. 2) Perservere! Perservere by placing one foot in front of the other. My last 6.2 of 26.2 was the worst miles and time. The finish line was in the forefront, but the body shut down. The mental power had to kick in. The 13.1 was fast and a breeze. During final dissection edits I was mentally exhausted. I was willing to quit. During dissertation, my body got active when my mind didn’t want to write. So I just started typing everyday. One sentence eventually became paragraphs to chapters. Some chapters were chill and enjoyable. 3) Pivot within the race. The environment changes rapidly and you have to pivot. You respond to the the environment’s feedback. During the dissertation process, you pivot to chair and committee feedback. If you want to complete, you must pivot. So, we are back on running and writing. Hitting the pavement and those keyboard keys. Why have I been working tirelessly on localization these past few months? Training as a service becomes a powerful and strategic tool in this process. This leads to a significant amount of content analysis and optimization, which in turn raise more ⁉ questions that you can address. Which is why my team and I have been applying Lean principles to our own processes! After 6 months of hard work, we learned quite a lot.
